As we reported in our blog last week, 44% of US survey respondents are not only doing more shopping online than they were pre-pandemic, but they expect to continue to do so even after the threat from COVID-19 recedes. The recently released US Census Bureau’s Estimated Quarterly US Retail Sales report underscores this trend, highlighting how e-commerce sales have soared 44.4% annually, bringing in over $201 billion in Q2 2020. 

This figure represents a significant spike over the 13.9% YoY growth rate seen in Q2 2019. E-commerce sales now account for an unprecedented 15.1% share of total US retail, up from 10.1% in Q2 of 2019. 

While in-store retail may regain sales as the pandemic eases, it’s clear e-commerce will continue to play a bigger role in retail for the foreseeable future. This trend means that retailers must work hard to ensure their consumers have authentic and safe experiences across all their digital channels, including their apps.
