Data.ai, formerly App Annie, has recently released their State of Mobile in 2022 report, and in it are statistics that will aid brand protection professionals in crafting their brand protection strategy.

Global downloads for apps reached 37 billion in Q1 of 2022. That’s an increase of over 11% year-over-year from 2021. That’s roughly 435,00 apps downloaded every minute. Of those apps, roughly 28 billion were downloaded to Android devices.

While iOS devices came in second with downloads, they came in first with consumer spending, accounting for almost $2 for each dollar spent on Android devices.

Overall, global spend in mobile apps reached $33 billion in the first quarter of 2022, the single highest quarter ever in the history of mobile apps. Consumers spent an average of $320,000 per minute every minute of 2021 in app stores, and it’s expected that amount will increase in 2022.

While mobile apps faced a surge in popularity in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the pandemic, this continued growth proves that we have transformed into a digital-first society.

Now more than ever, brands need to ensure that their customers have authentic and safe experiences with their brands online. In the digital world, trust is paramount, and having a robust and proactive mobile component in your overall brand protection strategy is the best way to preserve that trust.

One bad app in a mobile app store hiding behind your branded intellectual property or trademarks can cause lasting damage to your brand. While app platforms employ precautions to reduce the upload of malicious apps, bad actors continue to find new and innovative ways to lure in unsuspecting customers.
